Idolatry is disobedience against God and causes us to lose out on God’s blessings.
Our study focuses on Emotional Eating, however, it can apply to any addiction to
idols in our lives.
Food is an addiction when we use it to take away from our feelings of loss,
hopelessness, inadequacy, negative thoughts, and a host of other ills we are
facing. 1 Corinthians 10: 13 talks about trials and dealing with them. God only
gives you as much as you can handle.
We can get through our trials and tribulations by relying on God, his words, and
his promises. We should choose not to use food as comfort. God allows trials in
our life to teach us character, and morals and to use the fruits of the spirit to be
more like Him.
When you went through the trial, what lessons have you learned?
What do we get out of walking through the trial with Food?
Think carefully before you answer these questions by meditating and reading the scriptures below.
James 1:2-3
Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing
that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
Matthew 5:10-12
“Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness, for
theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people insult you and
persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for, in the same way,
they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
1 Peter 1:6-9
In this, you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you
have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being
more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may
be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus
Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do
not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible
and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your
souls.
When we as humans want to escape from our trials and tribulations, usually our first option is to turn to idols in our lives. But our trials are to teach us, to prepare us, and to learn the lessons of God.
Can you think of any areas of your life where the idolatry of food has hurt your
character development?
Explain. _____________________________________________________________________
Idolatry keeps us from turning to God for help. It does more than that, it
also keeps us from recognizing the seriousness of our bad habits, sins and
it makes us comfortable with them.
Do not expect growth to be easy or fun. It is usually uncomfortable, often
painful, and usually takes longer than it should. However, the rewards are
great and worth every moment of discomfort.
Failure is an inevitable part of
growing and we should turn to God in prayer, turn to scripture for support and
admit our failures, inadequacies, and desire for help.
God is with us every step of the way. He does not want us to fail. He wants to see you
overcome all obstacles and be the recipients of all his blessings.
Galatians 6: 9
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we
shall reap, if we faint not.
Romans 15:13
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you
trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power
of the Holy Spirit.
